BSNL’s Centrex : India’s Hosted PBX!

by Uttam Pegu on December 18, 2009

BSNL ( Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited), an Indian Government Enterprise, is world’s seventh largest telecommunications company, as per their website. While hosted PBX have been making huge business elsewhere in the world through many VoIP communications, advanced PBX features, BSNL provides free EPABX service to large enterprises, companies in India.

BSNL provides two kinds of PBX services to its customers in India. I think, one is truly hosted PBX service while the other is unique PBX service which woks on revenue sharing.

1. EPABX like facilities to group of existing or new BSNL customers

2. On premise legacy EPABX facilities

1. EPABX like facilities to group of existing or new BSNL customers is known as CENTREX. Here, many BSNL numbers form a group and between them, they can communicate freely with 2 or 3 digit dialing as in legacy PABX system.
This system offers PBX functions like conditional call forward, call pick up, call transfer etc. Though this system lacks most of the modern hosted PBX systems, but this is a known hosted PBX service in India.

2. On premise Legacy EPABX facilities
This is one PBX arrangement where BSNL installs large legacy PBX systems at customer premises. Customer does not pay for the huge cost of the PBX machines, but only rental of the PSTN services. BSNL provides maintenance, upgradation of features, technology.

Using this service, BSNL provides voice and data services. They also provide inter office or intra-office communications located at many places.

I think, this is a unique and useful PBX service provided by BSNL and it is useful for large orgnaisations, factories whose offices are located at many places.

BSNL has empaneled various PBX companies in India for providing PBX systems on revenue sharing basis. Client of this free PBX service provides airconditioned space, power backup etc. for the PBX machines.

For more information about these two services by BSNL, here is the link.
