There can not be any modern hotel without a PABX system installed. PABX is must for any hotel for conducting various operations and it offers a great service to a guest without which no guest would like to stay in the hotel.
PABX systems now a days come with many hotel specific features. These features are programmable at the time of installation of the PABX. Here are few features which are hotel specific:-
1. Check in and Check out facility
This feature allows front desk office of the hotel to check in a guest into hotel. After this many features in the hotel room will would be activated as per the room category. For example, some deluxe room may have facility to make international calls directly without operator while normal rooms may not have that facility. This is very useful feature which is widely used in PBX system for hotels.

PBX system is quite a delicate system to install. Specially as it involves lot of wiring around the premises. It also has to work 24 hours a day, without any failure. Failure of this system is always noticed first and many people, organisation are so used to it, without they feel handicapped. So, while installing PABX system, one must plan properly.
I am trying to list out some tasks to be done while installing a PBX :-
1. Survey the premise and make diagram
Before undertaking any installation work, one must inspect the premise and identify the area where the PBX machine will be installed. The area where PBX machines would be installed should be well protected all around from rain. It should be air conditioned area. Power back, power connections and earthing must be checked and verified. Earthing is very important for any PBX machines to work. The room should be dust free.

CTI (Computer Telephony Integration) is one feature which is must for your PBX system. If your PBX can not support CTI, then most probably, you have bought an outdated and featureless EPABX system. No doubt, all PBX machines would integrate with CTI hardware with analog interfacing, but analog interfacing with CTI is almost dead and it will die soon, if not already dead.
Why Computer Telephony integration ?
Computer Telephony Integration can be defined as a technology which allows interaction between telephone system and a computer system. It extends features of telephone or voice communication to a PC software and vice-versa. There are many applications based on CTI, right from caller id display on a screen to more sophisticated and advanced IVR ( Interactive Voice Response) systems.

Apart from many PBX equipments manufactured by many PBX companies, there are few freely available software based PBX systems that run on a PC. Most probably, there will not be a single person who has not heard about Asterisk, the most famous open source PBX system as well as many CTI applications.
Open source PBX systems are supported by large online communities. Many people use these open source PBX systems as they offer excellent customization as well as cheap CTI board integration.
1. Asterisk
Asterisk is supported by Digium Inc. the VoIP company with many CTI boards and applications. Asterisk is software based PBX system that runs on PC with operating system BSD Linux, Linux, MAC OSX. This free PBX system offers you all features and functionality provided by any hardware based proprietary PABX. It also supports VoIP, SIP etc. It has built in IVR ( Interactive Voice Response) facilities as it is a PC based PBX system.

India is now famous for fastest growing telecom market in the world . But, I think, this ‘telecom market’ mainly means GSM subscribers growth and enviable figures of adding almost 10 million subscribers every month. This figure surely looks impressive. But apart from, GSM or mobile subscribers, PBX market is also growing at around 20% ( estimate by few PBX dealers.)
Though VoIP is not gaining much popularity and has not grabbed any substantial market share in India so far. This is mainly due to government policy of barring VoIP connectivity with PSTN due to security concern. I thought I would try to prepare a list of PBX companies in India. I have divided them into two types, MNC ( Multinational Company) and Indian PBX companies:-
1. MNC branded PBX companies
1. AVAYA GlobalConnect
Most probably, the biggest MNC PBX player in India. They focus more into enterprise business. They have created their own dealer network all over India. They sell many voice networks, unified messaging solutions, call center etc.

between PA ( Personal assistant) and the officer. There are large intercoms available now a days as well as it can have connectivity with wireless, telephone as well as cellphone.
Intercom is also widely used as door phone which is used to communicate between a person inside home with anyone at the door without having to open the door. This is a typical use of intercom due to rising security concern in city areas.
What is PABX or PBX of EPABX ?
PBX also known as private branch exchange with various versions like private automatic branch exchange (PABX), electronic private automatic branch exchange (EPABX) is a small switch or telecom exchange owned as used by a private organisation or corporate. It has many features like voice mail, strong and sophisticated connection with PSTN ( Public Switched Telephone Network)

Recently, during my visit to Indian Telecom 2009 exhibition, I have met many people working in PABX industry in India for last 20 years or so. Interaction with them has been very informative for me.
Coral SBDX on-premise PABX
Almost everybody was anonymous that, on premise EPABX will not vanish from Indian market for many years to come. According to many people, as long as Indian railways and PSUs do not opt for hosted PBX solutions, it is difficult for hosted PBX to grab substantial market share in Indian PBX market. Presently, Indian Railways, government offices and various government enterprises constitute the majority users of PABX in India. They constitute all high cost PABX market share in India.

I had visited Indian Telecom 2009, exhibition held from 3rd Dec 2009 to 5th Dec 2009 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
I reached rather late at 1:30PM on 4th December 2009, from Rajiv Chowk ( previously Connaught Place) as the traffic was heavy. When I entered, I was surprised to find the registration counter almost empty! Any exhibition or trade fair that I had attended so far, I never experienced empty registration counter. I thought it must be the time as 1:30PM is normally lunch hour.
India Telecom Exhibition 2009
I got my visitor pass as well as one carry bag in less than one minute. It normally takes 10 to 15 minutes at busy hour. When I entered, to Hall No 18, I did not find many crowd which I experienced in my last India Telecom 2008 exhibition. So, I was kind of disappointed to find less crowd.
