PABX : Private Automated Branch Exchange

PABX stands for Private Automated Branch Exchange, it is an intelligent electronic equipment which controls, provide telephone connection locally in a office premises. It is nothing but a telephone exchange smaller in size, operation, features catering to smaller number of people.

They use old copper wire to connect to many telephone instruments at various places in same office. Voice is transferred without any digitisation through those wire. Though, control of calls are done electronically with micro processors. They have limited computer connectivity.

It can connect with public phone network too.  PABX is known as PBX (Private Branch Exchange) , EPABX (Electronic Private Automatic Branch Exchange).  Big telephone exchanges are known as switches and they can handle many calls simultaneously with many features, data facility. PABX may not have many features.

Latest trends in PABX world moving towards VOIP PABX or VOI PBX or IP PBX. These kind of PBX uses IP ( internet protocol) to carry calls. Voice is completely digitized.
